James Brown, NICA’s Head of Circus, has been awarded a Churchill Fellowship to travel to France, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, USA and Canada to investigate the artistic future of Australian Circus Arts.

James will be studying how elite circus schools and professional artists approach the challenge of balancing artistic practice and creativity with the demands of technical circus training. The fellowship will allow him to explore approaches for integrating both types of practice and training, including through new technologies.

“It’s a huge honour to be awarded a Churchill Fellowship,” James said. “I’m excited to investigate contemporary circus practice in Europe and North America and I’m looking forward to sharing my learnings with the circus community in Australia.”

James is one of 115 recipients of the prestigious Churchill Fellowship award. “Churchill Fellowships recognise people with passion and drive, providing an unrivalled opportunity and freedom for people to experience world’s best practice on issues that matter to Australian communities,” said CEO of the Churchill Trust, Mr Adam Davey.
